“I only want to travel with you,” he cooed.

Larry celebrated his 70th birthday with a BANG last March.

After a 90 minute Reiki massage that left him wiggly as a noodle, his “I got to do something active” kicked in.

Planning Larry’s 70th birthday trip was tricky.  Hawaii was a compromise from his wishes to visit Australia and New Zealand, plus he wouldn’t accept any other travel partner.  “I only want to travel with you,” he cooed.

I hurt my right knee, making it significantly worse hiking 4 days in Arizona the month prior.  The MRI showed a bone bruised.  “How on earth did you do that?”  Larry asked.

“I don’t know.”  A answered.

The day before we left for Hawaii, Larry said, “You don’t have to go with me, if you don’t want to.”

Did I hear him correctly?  After all the fussing and work, he excused me with the flick of his hand?  Surprised and very hurt, I did what I do best, I dug in.

“I’m going too.”  I answered.

So, we travelled to the south side of the big island because Larry wanted to witness Kilauea erupt.   Unfortunately mini-walk/hikes left me incapable the following day, so Larry took off, hiking, exploring, man-stuff - while I sat at the Airbnb and read for my death doula course.

Now back to his big seven-oh…

As the masseuse drove off, “ I feel guilty just leaving you here,” Larry announced as he slipped on shorts and hiking boots.

“You should,” I answered, “Are you going to wear your crown? Make sure to take selfies with it on.”

A few hours later, Larry came home covered with deep, volcanic rock abrasions.  He fell taking a selfie getting tangled in his gear (a backpack?).

Honest to God, this wife, me, a person who thinks she has the best intentions, LAUGHED OUT LOUD.   I laughed all fricken evening.

I felt slightly bad the following morning cuz he was sore.  And Larry did do a last minute load of laundry before we changed islands.

He’s not a bad fellow, he’s just fearless*.

*Fearless, the term Larry has asked me repeatedly to use, instead of stupid.
