Rainy day

Today started out rainy, as in a downpour.

What to do?  Larry read his novel.

I’d finished mine, so I borrowed a local book, Oceanic Marine Life of the Azores.

Fascinating, so much so, I sketched different whales and dolphins and made notes.  Did you know the term for tail slapping is lobtailing?  Or that the Japanese still hunt Short-finned pilot whales and Sei whales, in addition to others?  How about the Blainvilles beaked whale that becomes silent at depths less than 175 meters to avoid detection by Killer whales and False killer whales?  Or that the Atlantic spotted dolphin is only spotted as an adult and the spots increase with age?

Around lunch time, we went for a long walk, advertised as a hike on a paved path.  Having slogged through mud on the previous island hikes, this was a better idea, especially when the rain caught up with us.

We saw a pod of dolphins and one breached.

Larry the hunchback (wearing my backpack w/camera under his raincoat).

The windmills had to be moved manually to catch the wind.

Dinner was fabulous at the local French restaurant, Zefyr.  I had Porco (known as triggered fish), Larry Pork (oink oink).

We have one more day to explore Sao Jorge with rain expected.  There are two museums on the island, I’m guessing a visit to one?
